An IT systems industry association that provides information and education services to industry professionals has released a new data center design standard. BICSI 002-2010, Data Center Design and Implementation Best Practices, is the second standard published by Building Industry Consulting Service International Inc., following BICSI-001 2009, a standard for telecom premise cabling systems.
“BICSI 002 is a great resource for data center designers and operators because it provides a wealth of information on the subjects important to this audience—all in one place,” the standard’s lead editor Jonathan Jew said in a statement. “It is the culmination of the efforts of more than 150 subject matter experts in a wide variety of disciplines related to data center design.”
The organization, best known within the data center industry for its basic telecom systems training and certification program, said the new standard was inspired by changes in the data center industry. Data centers have become more complex as they strive to keep up with the pressure to increase efficiency. It is no longer enough for a data center to have expertise in one area. Today, they need to have comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical and telecom systems.
The new standard was developed by the organization’s standards committee, which consists from more than 200 members internationally.
BICSI is in the process of developing numerous other design standards, including one focusing specifically on data center electrical systems and one focusing on data center telecommunications systems. Other standards in the works include healthcare, electronic safety and security and bonding and grounding.
Another new data center standard from another industry organization is expected to be published in the near future. The Uptime Institute plans to release its Tier Standard: Operational Sustainability on July 1. Uptime’s standard, however, focuses on operations policies and processes data centers have in place to prevent outages. It will complement the organization’s older Tier standard, which evaluated the reliability of a data center’s electrical infrastructure.
